Fundación Canaria de Investigación Sanitaria (FUNCANIS) is a foundation whose beneficiaries are those institutions, associations and individuals that participates in research activities in the field of health. The fundamental mission of FUNCANIS is to promote knowledge in the field of biomedical research and its effective application to improve the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease. The University Hospital Dr. Negrín is the main Research Unit (RU) of FUNCANIS, accredited as RU from 1993. The Hospital Dr- Negrín gives service to 450,000 persons, and has a total staff of 3,742 hospital personnel, of which 723 correspond to the Medical Division, 1,968 to Nursing and 1,036 to the Division of Management and General Services. The Hospital offers 747 beds, 24 operating theatres and 86 offices for external consultations. It is one of the latest modern-equipped hospitals in Spain, including among others, magnetic resonance units, lineal accelerators and internal robotic transport means. It is a regional reference centre for cardiac surgery and radio-therapeutic oncology.

Project Role
FUNCANIS has received the demonstrator hyperspectral camera setup and is using this system during surgery, collecting images of tumour and normal tissues to establish the training set for the prototype system.

Mr. Jesús Morera Molina is Specialist in Neurosurgery. During his involvement with the project, he was head of  Neurosurgery at the University Hospital Dr. Negrin in Gran Canaria and lecturer at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. He has been Deputy Director of the University Hospital Dr. Negrin, member of the Board of the College of Physicians of Las Palmas and of the National Commission on Neurosurgery.  He has since been promoted to Health Minister of the Canary Government.
