In conjunction with the BSN 2009 Workshop, a BSN Platform Tutorial will be run on June 6 2009 at UC Berkeley.

The BSN platform tutorial is designed for students, engineers and researchers who are working on or interested in BSN related research. The tutorial will begin with an introduction on the concept of BSN, its motivations, applications, technologies and research directions. It will follow by a number of hands-on sessions showing how to use the new BSN development kit to develop prototypes and systems for BSN related research. In addition, we are going to introduce the new concept of VSN and present the brand new VSN platform.

Each registered attendee will receive a new BSN development kit v3.

BSN Platform Tutorial

10:00 – 10:30

Session 1 - Introduction to Body Sensor Networks

Introduce the current state-of-the-art in wireless sensor networks and its significance and future applications to sensing and monitoring devices for healthcare.

10:30 – 11:00

Session 2 - Hardware and Installation

Introduce the basic architecture and extensibility of the BSN node for different sensing environments both for healthcare applications and general wireless sensor networks.

11:00 – 11:30Break
11:30 – 12:00

Session 3 - Introduction to Programming Environment

Introduce the major concepts required to program the BSN node applications.

12:00 – 12:30

Session 4 - BSN Programming (hands-on session)

Hands on session on BSN node programming. This session will illustrate how to build, debug, and run applications on the BSN node.

12:30 – 14:00

Lunch Break

14:00 – 14:45

Session 5 - BSN Sensor Interface (hands-on session)

Hands on session on sensor data acquisition with the BSN node. This session will illustrate how to interface different sensors with the BSN node and program the BSN node to acquire sensor data.

14:45 – 15:30

Session 6 - Wireless Sensing

Introduce the concept and theory of packet broadcasting, how to form wireless sensor network, and issues related to message hopping. It will also illustrate a simple multi-hop data propagation method that allows data to be collected by a central location.

15:30 – 16:00Break
16:00 – 17:00

Session 7 - Introduction to Vision Sensor Networks (VSN)

Introduce the novel concept of VSN, and how it can complement the BSN and be applied in healthcare, well-being, and sports applications. The new VSN platform will be presented follow by demonstrations.

17:00 – 17:30Session 8 - Q&A and Conclusion

BSN Tutorial @ Imperial July 2007
Time : July 2007
Venue: Department of Computing, Imperial College London (Directions)

Prof. Guang-Zhong Yang and Benny Lo (Imperial College London)

Each fully registered attendee will receive a BSN development kit that consists of a programming board, a sensor board, and a pair of BSN nodes.

BSN Platform Tutorial @ RWTH 26 March 2007
In conjunction with the BSN 2007 Workshop, we ran another BSN Platform Tutorial in RWTH Aachen University, Germany.

We were amazed how fast the attendees in picking up the sensor programming. Everyone was able to finish the difficult challenges set at the tutorial and had fun playing with the sensors.

BSN Tutorial - 10 July 2006
In conjunction with the UKUbinet workshop, we ran another BSN tutorial at Imperial.  Although everyone looked a bit serious in the photos below when Prof. Yang was introducing recent wireless sensor technologies, all the attendees left with a smile on their faces, as they were all able to program their BSNs to send sensor data wirelessly and do simple context aware sensing.

BSN Platform Tutorial @ MIT 6 April 2006
Thanks to the MIT Media lab administrative and technical support teams, the BSN platform tutorial ran successfully in the Media lab, and participants had a good time in programming, experimenting and tweaking the BSN nodes.
